A slinger signaller has one of the most important jobs on a construction site. Working alongside the lifting teams, their responsibility is to provide safe direction and supervision to the crane operators, as well as ensuring the safety of other workers or visitors that are potentially at risk. In order to perform the role to a high standard, the Slinger Signaller requires a great deal of focus, awareness and diligence.

The slinger signaller will act as the eyes and ears of the crane operator, who is likely to have an obstructed view of their surroundings. This obstructed view increases the risks involved with loading, lifting and generally operating the crane and so they need the slinger signaller to communicate via a series of hand signals to assist with manoeuvres.

The standard hand signals used by slinger signallers must be:

  • Precise
  • Clear
  • Easy to make
  • Easy to understand

Typical salary range

Average salary: £32,542.

Qualifications

  • CITB Health, safety and environment test needs to have been passed within the previous 23 months before the course start date.
  • CPCS trained operator (red) card on passing the CPCS technical tests.
  • CITB National Construction College certificate.
