The long-awaited MetroLink project for Dublin has officially been approved, paving the way for Ireland’s first metro system after years of debate and planning, with main construction scheduled to begin in 2026 following cabinet approval of the project’s €9.5 billion business case.
According to the Department of Transport, the project has now entered the procurement and detailed design phase, with enabling works planned for late 2025.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) said the project timeline includes tendering for major construction contracts throughout 2025, with full construction expected to begin in 2026.
