Construction Output Falls 12.7% in Q1 of 2024
According to new figures published by the Central Statistics Office shows that the volume of production in Building and Construction has fell 12.7% in Q1 of 2024 compared to Q1 of 2023. Between Q4 of 2023 and Q1 of 2024 the volume of construction fell by 1.8%. The only sector to show an annual increase was Residential Building, which rose by 6.3%. Non-Residential Building and Civil Engineering fell by 15.3% and 7.9% respectively compared to Q1 of 2023.
Government Approves Guidance to Reduce Embodied Carbon in Construction
Peter Burke TD, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment will write to public bodies to advise them of new guidance when designing public projects. This new guidance will particular cover the procurement of cement and concrete products. This new guidance will ensure a consistent approach to reducing embodied carbon. There are four key objectives of the new guidance:
- Using less concrete, and less cement by designing, specifying, and managing products on site better.
- Specify lower carbon concrete.
- Specify lower carbon cement.
- Introduce broader Carbon Management systems for large infrastructure projects.
