Ixion and Wates Group are working in partnership to deliver their next fully funded two week construction programmes in Tunbridge Wells from Monday 31st October, Birmingham from Monday 14th November, and Trafford from Monday 28th November.

The Wates “Building Futures” opportunity is available to 19+ Job Seekers in receipt of state benefits. No previous experience or knowledge of the construction sector is required although candidates must show an enthusiasm and positive attitude towards pursuing a career in construction.  15 places are available.

Learners will gain basic skills across a range of trades within construction e.g. carpentry, painting/decorating, plumbing. They will achieve two nationally recognised qualifications - the BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Construction and the Health and Safety in the Environment Award Level 1 as well as obtaining their Green Labourer’s CSCS card – all funded by Ixion and Wates.

Lunch will be provided each day and learners will receive PPE (boots, hat, jacket, gloves, and glasses) which they get to keep.

Learners will be required to attend from 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday for the duration of the programme. Week one will be focused on gaining practical skills in a workshop environment in a number of trades. Week two involves some classroom activities, preparation for the CSCS test, visits to local Wates sites to gain a valuable insight into what it is like to work in construction and interviews with employers - Wates and their supply chain including representatives from O’Neill & Brennan. On average, 55% of learners progress into employment after their course.

Learners will get the opportunity to put their new skills into practice in a community project on the final day of the course e.g. painting a local community centre. A certificate presentation ceremony follows.

Wates will carry out a 15 minute interview with each candidate to ensure they have a positive attitude towards working in the construction sector. Successful candidates will be contacted within two days of their interview to confirm their place on the programme.
